In today’s society abortion is a very controversial issue. Although many people think that it should be legalized, there are just as many who think it should not. In her article ‘’some thoughts about abortion’’ Quindlen describes her own opinions about the issue and she indicates reasons for keeping abortion legal. I partially agree with the writer that in some cases aortion might be allowed, but I think it is ultimately a murder and it should not be legalized totally.
I agree with writer that abortion might be inevitable and the prospective mother might not have another option. For medical reasons where the mother’s life is in danger abortion might be the solution and the family have the right to decide. We might witness some unfortunate situations that the mother and the child at the same time are in jeopardy. Then they have to save one of them. It must be too difficult to bear. Moreover, there is another case which might be seen the same as abortion for medical reasons, which is the case of rape or incest. In such a terrible situation the decision should be up to the victim’s wish. As we can see, in these situations the mother has no arbitrary decision before the child falls into the womb.
Apart from the cases mentioned above, abortion should be illegal. Any woman has the right to choose what she wants as every human being does, but if she didn’t think carefully before being pregnant and if she doesn’t want an unborn child, it doesn’t give her the right to terminate her child’s life. That the unborn child can’t speak doesn’t mean it has no potential right. Moreover, if the woman believes in God, no matter what the name of the religion is, in every religion people don’t have the right to kill each other. Also people should keep sex within the boundary of marriage due to the fact that single parenthood is very difficult under any circumstances so that when the child comes to the world, it has security of the family.
To sum up, abortion shouldn’t be legalized for convenience. People should take measures if they don’t want to give birth. However, in the cases of rape and incest potential mother or father should take the responsibility and decide what they want about the unborn child’s life.
